Most expensive clocks sold
The world's most expensive clock sold was the Henry Graves Jr.'s pocket gold watch. It was created and manufactured by one of the world's leading clock makers, Patek Philippe. The clock was bought in Sotheby auction house on December 1999 for a whooping price of $11,003,500. It was sold to an anonymous clock collector.
The Graves' gold pocket watch story started when Ohio vehicle engineer James Ward Packard, Graves' rival, ordered Patek Philippe to create a clock with the most quantity of time complications; - mechanical utilities of a watch excluding the hours, minutes, & seconds. From 1900 and 1927, Patek Philippe has custom built 13 complicated watches to Packard. The clocks specifications include a perpetual calendar, sunrise & sunset display, and a celestial diagram. With his pride and honor at stake, New York businessman Henry Graves Jr. also hired Patek Philippe in 1926 to make a complicated watch which would compete with James Ward Packard's. Because of the clock's complexity, it took at least 3 years to design and 5 years to create. In 1933, the Graves' gold pocket watch was finally finished. It has 24 time complications, horological utility, and a nighttime diagram.
